Covid 19 have brought us a different way of life. One thing that is currently not possible is car shows. As car folks we still want to enjoy our cars while still being respectful and exercise social distance. So how can we do this and still stay safe?
Easy!! Drive them! Who wants to sit fry in the sun at a static car show anyway?
We met up at Harvey Field in Snohomish for pre-flight check and driver’s meeting. Today’s plan was to explore the east side of our lovely state. When I say east, we are still staying on the west side of the Cascade mountain range. This part offers rural green pastures and green wooded areas.
This is the self appointed cruise director showing where left is…well, the other left.
Mike, David, Eric, Walt, Dick, another Mike, Your Editor Rolf were present as well as a “new” guy John with his beautiful 142S.
Eric’s 1800S is finished in the copyrighted Anton Sea Foam Light Cream Green color. If you duplicate it, you will get a cease & desist letter from his legal team!
The goal of the first leg is the Sultan Osprey Park in Sultan. We grabbed the Old Snohomish Monroe road out of Snohomish and to Monroe.
This connected us to Ben Howard Road. A great twisty and woodsy road that will test your shocks, sway bars and road holding. No parts fell off that we know of.
Here the owner is admiring his own car, it’s a pretty common occurrence.
As we approach Sultan going across a wooden bridge we are close to our destination: Sultan Osprey Park. The park offered shaded parking and a large covered area where we set up lawn chairs and had a social distance lunch.
After lunch we made a pretty parade up to Sultan Basin Road. If you continue this road north it turns in to a dead end but it gets more green and woodsy as you go. Great driving and not much traffic.
We found a good turnaround spot to stretch our legs and to take more pictures of the cars we have owned for years!
We cut back on Kellogg road and it was just as green and beautiful as the rest of the roads. The mountains were out in full force.
Heading back south I was pursued by a 1800S in custom green paint job. I did what any man would do, just like the Hot Rod Lincoln song goes; “I slipped her in to overdrive” but he stayed on my bumper.
We stopped at a coffee hut on our way home because the Cruise Director was running low of caffeine. We then drove the Ben Howard road back and it was just perfect.
At the 202 turn off, the northern folks waived good bye to headed home. With four cars left, we grabbed the Tualco road for an organoleptic experience by driving by a pig farm.
We all made it home from there. We were done around 2:00 so there were still time to enjoy the afternoon at home.
This was a great day for driving a vintage Volvo! Let’s do this again.
