Walt’s Original Paint 1957 Duett

1957:  USSR launches Sputnik 1, a satellite that would cross American soil and freak the bejesus out of many Americans,  South Vietnam attacked by Viet Cong Guerrillas and Elvis Presley purchases Graceland…oh yeah…

…Volvo made this Volvo Duett 444, chassis number 10434

Volvo called this model the Duett (duet) as it was definitely a dual purpose vehicle. Haul materiel for work in the week and haul the family out for a picnic on the weekend.

The Duett was unique to the Volvo lineup as it used a conventional ladder type frame and leaf sprung rear axle.

Walt purchased this car from it’s second owner, Alan. Alan bought it from the estate of the original owner who imported the car from Sweden when it was new.

The car has been in a heated storage since 1987 and the odometer shows 89458 km which translates to about 55586 original miles.

Have you ever seen on of these without rust? The original spare tire and tools rests behind the license plate panel.

Easy to load plumber’s supplies or picnic basket.

The ash strips on the floor are in original finish as this area was covered for many years. Volvo blanket are mandatory equipment.

The wheel house of this time machine is just as nice. The steering wheel does not even have any cracks. Amazing!

Split windshield adds to the vintage looks of the Duett. Volvo made a one piece curved windshield starting with the 1960 models.

Even the factory roof rack is in excellent condition.

Power comes from a B16A (1.6 liter) with a single Zenith carburetor backed by a three speed transmission. Walt is considering installing a full syncro four speed.
Note the chain for the radiator roll up curtain. This was to protect the radiator from those really cold Swedish winters and help warm up the car. 6 volt system is still adequate.

New but era correct Michelin XZX adds comfort and safety. Wheels were body color on these.

I am sure you have seen the prancing moose stickers on a few Volvos. Walt did one better, he brings a life sized Moose to the party!

A lot of folks thinks that the production of the Duett ended with the demise of the Volvo 544 in 1966 but Volvo kept this practical and popular car until 1969.

A version of the 145 wagon called Express with a raised roof and fiberglass tail gate was produced to replace the aging Duett but it really didn’t take off like the Duett.

This is Walt’s badminton coach…so he sez…

Walt is a true Vintage Volvo enthusiast. The Duett’s garage mate is this 1953 Volvo PV444. Not bad company.

Thanks Walt for sharing your car with all of us.
