Member Focus: John’s Volvo 1971 142S

Volvo presented a new model in August of 1966, the Volvo 144 and it was offered as a 1967 model. Almost a year later, the two door version was offered, called 142.

The 140 series was also the first car from Volvo that was offered with four wheel disc brakes as standard. For some reason, Volvo decided to abandon the old “Ford” wheel bolt pattern (5 on 4.5 inch) and go to  5x108mm bolt pattern.

Compared to 122 and 1800 cars, not many of these remain, making in extra special to see such a nice example. It is also not hard to figure out that this is the car that gave Volvo it’s “brick” moniker.

VSA member John Chattin-McNichols checks in with his super nice 1971 142S.

John’s car is finished in Volvo’s dark blue, code 96 and I must say it looks fantastic. Virgo “turbo” wheels are are from a later model Volvo. This is John’s sixth Volvo.

Rebuilt SU carburetors ready to be installed.

John’s tells me that the car was a stalled project with t was a stalled project with the engine out and trays of bits in baggies and boxes.

Here John’s in putting the finishing touches on the engine installation.

The car also have the GT instruments and John had opted for red dash lighting.

This 144 was owned earlier in John’s life.

Also, John used to be a custodian for a super nice Volvo Duett. Here he is getting a roof rack installed. That is Matt from X-Ray Auto on the ground checking on…something. Certainly not the roof rack!

Thanks for sharing your car and story with us. Look forward to see you and your Volvo 142S on the road.
